The RUPA Board of Directors hosted a luncheon meeting for County Commissioners Clyde Taylor, Tom Sublett and Richard Strickland at Sea Palms on February 27, 2012. In the informal atmosphere the Board was able to ask the Commissioners about many pressing Island issues. There was discussion of the failed SPLOST, water and sewer rates and problems as well as the upcoming T-SPLOST. The Commissioners noted that there are no funds for the proposed dredging of the Channel in the Intracoastal Waterway, and that new proposed roundabouts are on hold until there are more funds. We were reminded about the T_SPLOST vote on July 31st. It is a 10 year tax.
RUPA has also joined the Chamber of Commerce in order to become more informed on local issues and to encourage everyone to vote and advocate knowledgably. Contact board members any time with questions and issues.

Island Planning Commission
The Island Planning Commission and the County Commission defeated the request to rezone additional property around the Red Barn so that a mid-Island supermarket could be built. Much of the land had been rezoned in 2005, so that it is likely that a shopping center will still be built. The Planning Commission also approved a light on Sea Island road across from Harris Teeter (the land owner is paying for it). The Island Planning Commission meets every 3rd Tuesday usually in room 108 of the old Casino Building. Watch the newspaper and website for changes in location.
